Based on the analysis of the interviews, two themes emerged that were mentioned in reference to the relationship between mindfulness and digitalization: (a) “Mindful by Workplace-Design” and (b) “Working Mindfully in a Digital Cooperation”, leading to suggested modifications for mindful digital workplaces. Based on the compatibility discussion, we discovered a (c) “Tipping Point” of digital mindfulness, i.e., an overuse of digital elements when practicing mindfulness. In the following, we first present how the experts understand mindfulness in general and in the corporate context and then present the two themes before elaborating on the compatibility shift.
Understanding Mindfulness
The experts in the study had a good understanding of mindfulness, both in general and in the corporate context. They described mindfulness as an attitude of paying attention to oneself in a nonjudgmental way, focusing on the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness was seen as a way to connect consciously with one’s experiences and to be open to inner experiences. It was also mentioned that mindfulness involves perceiving feelings and emotions for the sake of physical and mental health.
The experts emphasized the importance of mindfulness in the corporate context, especially in workplaces where teamwork and collaboration are important. Mindfulness was seen as a way to cope with the challenges of a fast-paced work environment, to improve decision-making and reflection on processes, and to prevent negative effects such as stress, burnout, and emotional outbursts. Mindfulness was also seen as a way to improve communication, creativity, and focus at work.
Theme 1: Mindful by Workplace-Design
One theme that emerged from the interviews was the idea of creating mindful workplaces through design. The experts suggested various modifications for creating mindful digital workplaces, including designated mindfulness rooms where employees can go to practice mindfulness without interruptions. They also mentioned the importance of incorporating mindful interventions into work routines, such as taking breaks, practicing mindful meetings, and providing opportunities for meditation at work. The experts emphasized the role of leadership in promoting mindfulness at work and creating a supportive environment for employees to practice mindfulness.
Theme 2: Working Mindfully in a Digital Cooperation
Another theme that emerged was the idea of working mindfully in a digital cooperation. The experts discussed the challenges of being mindful in a digital work environment, where there are constant distractions and interruptions. They suggested strategies for working mindfully in such an environment, such as setting boundaries and creating social cues for uninterrupted focus. The experts also emphasized the importance of mindful leadership and creating a balance between digitalization and mindfulness.
The Tipping Point of Digital Mindfulness
The compatibility of mindfulness and digitalization was a topic of discussion among the experts. While some experts saw the potential benefits of using technology to support mindfulness practices, others expressed concerns about the overuse of technology and its potential to hinder mindfulness. The experts highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between technology and mindfulness, and they discussed the risks of relying too heavily on technology for mindfulness practices. They emphasized the need for self-awareness and self-control when using technology for mindfulness.
Implications for Mindful Digital Workplaces
Based on the themes and the compatibility discussion, the experts suggested several implications for creating mindful digital workplaces. They emphasized the importance of incorporating mindfulness into workplace design and routines, promoting mindful leadership, and providing digital support for mindfulness practices. The experts discussed the potential benefits of using mindfulness apps, wearables, and other digital tools to support mindfulness practices, but also highlighted the risks and limitations of relying too heavily on technology. They emphasized the need for balance and self-awareness when using technology for mindfulness.
In conclusion, the experts in the study had a good understanding of mindfulness and its relevance in the corporate context. They discussed the challenges of practicing mindfulness in a digital work environment and suggested modifications for creating mindful digital workplaces. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between technology and mindfulness and discussed the risks and limitations of relying too heavily on technology for mindfulness practices. The findings of the study have implications for creating mindful digital workplaces and promoting mindfulness in the corporate context.
