What exactly is permaculture?
Permaculture is a problem solving master. In itself permaculture’s teachings are focus on observing nature, it puts all its emphasis on the natural patterns and processes.
So what…
Well that means that it is by default focused on truth and reality. It is a philosophical practice that is so dependably grounded in science in viable data. It takes a strong stand and demands that practicitioners have to let go of what they might feel they wish or want and work with the real factual opportunities being presented. It then goes on to show the way to think about us how to spot these opportunities. It focuses on the fundlemental human opportunties that support your basic life food, shelter, medicine, social engagement, consumption etc. and then once it has given you the mindset and practice of a permie you are able to sustain your life with a certain level of resiliency that is so missed by many so called ‘modern’ cultures.
The teachings and practice are grounded in reality making permaculture a very fluid adaption tool. It can be used in any situation. In fact it just becomes a part of your mindset, your way of looking and thinking about the world. The teachings are universal for no matter what the situation, everything is relative. What permaculture is exactly is a code of ethics and a bunch of principles, or ways of questions and acting. It is by design meant to break down the incredibly complex systems of our existence into simple processes that will focus our energy on what is of value at any given situation. It means as everything around you changes the permaculture mind, one of resilience, yet freedom and fun will still be valid and of use. The ethics and priniciples will benefit you as they are, they are your framework for viewing the world. One ground on truth and focused on action. It is totally 100% made for adaptation and change. No two people are alike. No two situations are alike. No two permie are alike. Yet we all benefit each other.
It is not just a gardening or farming system, tool or otherwise. It might have start with the focus being on food and shelter, medicine but that is because it is the stuff we all need. So inevitably permaculturist have got good are farming systems. But permaculture is not a farming system.
Permaculture is many things to many people. I think it is one of the most fundlemental skill, on of the most powerful mindsets you can enjoy in this life. What permaculture is exactly is a code of ethics and principles that gives you resilience and opportunity in life. Once you start practicing permaculture you will understand and know how freeing the lifestyle, the mind is when trained in permaculture gold.
What is permaculture? Three core ethics which is 1. caring for people, 2. care for the environment that sustains life, which requires 3. which is the balance and fair exchange between host and hostee. Us humans being a hostees of this earth, the host to our existance.
What is caring for people?
First and foremost we must care for ourselves. If we do not have the abilities or energy to help others we are not going to be much help to others. So self resiliency and self sustainablity is the ability for one to care for ones self. If sick you must rest. You must eat healthy to have a healthy amount of energy. We must be able to provide for ourselves. Once that is done you are already helping others by showing them the way. You are now an example and that is really valuable. Of course as you as sustained you also want protection from other humans, it is not just against drought, fire and storm.
So you care for those around you. It isn’t hard to create a yield helping others. By this I mean that you focus of where YOU can actually benefit, you know, like learning extra skills and what not, as well as the other parties benefit, for reasons of their own. This is caring for people. The other element is in treating people as they are. Not how you wish them to be. So being caring for others is providing them with what they need not what they might want. So do not give an alcholic drink but don’t just avoid them. Ask them to come over or go out for an activity other then a drink.
Caring is not running away, it isn’t pretending. If someone continually lies do not just blindly follow what they say as verifed. To treat someone as they are is to value other for who they are right now and is the most caring way to treat each other. It means helping and supporting each other in a way that empowers and enables us to grow stronger both individually and together. Our strength comes from our individual united strength.
Care for the environment? What does caring for the environment mean?
Does it mean you use a lot of fuel to drive a lot of miles? Does it mean you have to use a lot of paper towels to clean up a lot of messes? Does it mean you have to have a lot of appliances to do a lot of things? It could be. There are so many things each one of us could and should be doing to live a life that is more in balance with the productive abilities of nature. We should be engaged with the processes of life and involve ourselves in having an active connection with the earth, animals, plants, mushrooms etc. We are apart of nature. Nature grew us, we belong to her.
In nature there is wisdom. It has been said that to know thyself is to know the universe. That is a powerful idea that gives that know-er inner peace and joy. When you are doing you in a way that is not harmful. In a way that creates more than you consume you can live guilt free and experience the pleasures of live without the need of any material wealth.
What is the permaculture ethic of fair share?
In each moment there is an exchange between us and our environment. We are impacting the change. We are creators. So we must create ecologies and environments that imbrace diversity of life. In which the environment is supported to create the best balance for our own evolution. After all the vast majority of our evolution has been in the forest, in the bush our in the jugles and open spaces. Living as a co existance force. Now we have excluded oursleves. We push nature away at our own cost. To care for people is to care for the environment that sustains them. The environment that sustains people is an environment full of life. You could say the ideal environment is one that is naturally abundant. Each element in balance. Not too much of any other. So it is the point at which each element is at its max in unison with all the other elements at the uniform peaks in conjuction.
Fairly sharing the energy and resources around provides maximum value in each of those resources. It is the most effective and efficient way of doing things. By elevating fair share to a core ethic is mean to life in balance between lifestyle and environment is the only way to sustain human culture and individual abundance of life. Fair share is the link between humans and our environment. It is the ethical element that connects humans to their environments and places the human environment above the needs of the human, in isolation, and any particular environment, in isolation. It is the ethical fundation that turns a potential duelist view, one of human as separate from their environment to one of non-duel. Where humans are apart of their environment. That humans are somehow different then the nature around them. That humans are not the same as the animals. That humans have not co-evolved intermitty connected.
This view is the mainstream view in most scientific fields, for example the fields of epigenetics, behavioural science, neuroscience, immunology, ecology, biology, physics, chemistry. There are three factors that make the one unified human experience or consciousness. That is our evolutionary (ever changing) (1) perception of the (2) external and (3) internal environments. This one life, one experience is unified. In our science, in our minds we separate things, we that the element away from it’s environment changing the relativity. This helps see differences, it is a way of illustrating and investigating.
