In permaculture we try to learn from the lessons nature. One way we can do this is to mimic the natural patterns and shapes. Rivers which are natures drains meanders through the landscape unlike a lot of our common straight line drains which can create many problems. A snake also uses meandering as a means of transportation. Spirals, branches, and helixes are all common natural space and for good reason. These shapes are functional and beautiful. Principle 7 in permaculture design tells us to Design from patterns to details. Natural patterns and shapes should be used to observe and understand the energy flows of nature and society. From those observations we will gain a better ability to form a strong sensible design which enables us to fill in the details as we need. Ever heard of a herb spiral?
