What is a food web?
A food web (or food chain) is a representation of the relationships that exist between species in an ecosystem. A food web is a diagram that shows the feeding relationships of various species within a given ecosystem, from top to bottom. How do we build a food web? Building a food web involves identifying what are called “ecosystem engineers” (i.e. animals and plants that influence other species). For example, if you look at a pond or lake, you will notice many different types of plants, algae, insects, fish and birds. A food web would represent the relationships between these various species, as well as the relationships between the organisms themselves.
Why are food webs important to understand?
A: Food webs are a type of ecological network that models the interactions between organisms and their environment. They’re often used as a tool to understand the ecosystem, and to help people identify conservation priorities and problems. In many cases, understanding the food web can also tell you something about the community of species that live in the area. As an example, consider this hypothetical food web. It’s made up of three species: grass, kangroo and dingo. This food web illustrates the classic predator-prey relationship in the kangaroo and dingo. We see that the dingo is connected with the grass for it’s survial. The grass and the dingo need each other. The dingos keep the kangaroos moving thus protecting the grass from over grazing. The grass into can support a healthy population of kangaroos. The three species are connected and this connection can be illistrated in a food web.
Food webs are useful for several reasons. First, they allow you to visualize the interactions between species in a way that is intuitive. Second, they allow you to easily see how the abundance of one species changes as a result of those interactions. Finally, they give you insight into what kinds of problems can occur in the system.
